What Is Marriage?
Everyone talks about weddings and marriages but what is marriage and what does being married mean in the modern word. We can start off with a definition of marriage as the joining of two people in a legal agreement whereby they will agree to maintain a special relationship between the two of them and basically put that person first, above all others, for the rest of their lives. Different cultures may have variations on this but it is what marriage means for most people.
Being True To Each Other
It is expected that a husband and wife, as married partners, will not have a physical relationships with anyone other than their spouse and be true to each other. It is not actually illegal to have other relationships and if both partners were happy about this then they could continue being married and having additional partners as much as they like.
What Is Marriage – The History Of Marriage
No doubt there are complicated legal definitions of what is marriage but Wikipedia describes marriage as “a social union or legal contract between people that creates kinship” and that sounds good enough to me.
We don’t know when marriage first started. No doubt couples were pairing off together since the dawn of time but it would only have been after religious or legal authorities appeared when the concept of marriage moved from being a personal agreement between two people to one where there was a religious or legal commitment.
The marriage follows a proposal of marriage from one party to the other. Proposing marriage is a request for the other person to commit to getting married to the person who asked them. In some parts of the world arranged marriages still occur where the parents decide who their children should marry but this practice appears to be reducing as people become more aware of their freedom of choice to marry whoever they choose if the other person is willing. Every parent in the world would want the best for their child and may not be enthusiastic about the choice of partner their child makes but most would accept that once the child becomes an adult it is their childs choice to make.
What Is Marriage – Common Law Marriages
Becoming a couple and being married usually happens at a wedding ceremony where vows are made and exchanged and a marriage certificate or some other legal marriage document is provided. Many couples choose not to go through the ceremony of marriage and instead choosing to be what are often known as common law marriages.
These personal agreements are usually of far less legal significance than a proper legally approved marriage and some people who have been in this situation find themselves losing out badly when it comes to a separation and division of the shared possessions due to the lack of legal support for the equality of partners in a common law marriage in some parts of the world.
The world today seems far more focused on fame, fortune and physical possessions than it does on spiritual or moral obligations but marriage continues to be seen as a an important and very significant moment in peoples lives. Being married and having children are the most satisfying and rewarding of experiences most of us can ever have have. Buying a new car, the latest gadget or even finding 15 minutes of fame on TV, whilst it may be momentarily exciting can never compare to knowing what is marriage is and what it feels like to be in a good marriage.
What Is Marriage – Happiness And Contentment
So what is marriage and what do we get out of it? Well, it is difficult to define and impossible to fully explain what being in a great marriage feels like. It is one of those feelings that can really only be known by experiencing it. You do need to be with the right person and it is easier if your life is moderately comfortable with few external problems affecting your relationship but if you find the right person. If you work together as a genuine married couple should and if you are both prepared to give and put the other person first, then, when somebody asks you what is marriage you will answer very simply and say, ” Marriage is happiness, contentment and it is wonderful”.
